Friday inspiration with Thomas Eakins’ The Clinic of Dr. Gross, 1875. This painting is important for a number of reasons, one of them being its unyielding realism. It also shows the emergence of surgery as a healing practice, treating a young boy’s osteomyelitis of the femur, when previously his leg would have been amputated. At the time, this painting was considered too graphic or horrid, and shocked many. I wrote a paper on this painting back in college as an art history major, so I could go on and on about it. -- source link
