skeletongrrl: CLEAVECROSS CHARACTERS ( 1 / ??? ) - everell, queen of the six-shooter. “So what’s the job?” Everell finally asks, spooning up some stew. She blows on it gently, watching him over a chunk of potato. “I would call it unorthodox. There’s no particular target, and I don’t really view this as just an employer and employee relationship. I’d prefer to think of it like a partnership. We each get our cut of my profits, and things end very simply.” Everell’s eyes narrow. “… No target? How’s that work?” “Funny you should bring up the word ‘work’. It’s about my work,,and the fact that I need more of it. I don’t have grudges against many people in Faldira.” That makes his new dinner companion make a particular undignified snort, as if he’s said something that’s a few degrees beyond normal comedy. Marsden continues regardless. “It’s true. I haven’t been back long enouogh to form particularly strong opinions. Instead, I just need more bodies in the area. When I was younger, people were dying of illness left and right. Now, whatever deity you like best seems to have come down on the side of medical miracles, and they’re all living. That creates a problem for me, as you can imagine.” Silence sits between them. Everell’s spoon clatters against her bowl after a moment, the chair creaking as she leans back to just look at him. Marsden stays placid and still, staring back at her with his expression as utterly even as he can make it. “So you just want me to kill anyone, and probably give you some warning, so you can get over there first and… do what you do with it.” “That makes it sound so crass. I’d just like to have the best chance of getting the first offer on the table.” Everell picks up her spoon. Then she tilts forward, elbow resting on the table, and jabs the end of the spoon towards him. “All you endparlor owners are bastards deep down. No one gets into this business because they’re happy or particularly good. It’s because it’s the best job in the world. There’s no worry about you ever not having business. And you’re telling me that it’s not going fast enough for your tastes?” “Just about, yes.” She shovels a spoonful of stew into her mouth for a long moment. “I’ll need somewhere I can get back to if things get a little close,” she says. “This place is good. Distant, and most of the people I might run into won’t think to check the very same place that you’re bringing the body I made. Before you say anything about needing a route in, don’t bother. I scoped you out yesterday. I can get from the fence into a second story window on the back side of this place. That’s the only direct help I’d need from you. So what about it?” For a moment, he merely watches her. “You want to be able to hide out here. That’s all?” “What else are you going to be able to help me with? Standing around, taking up space and air? If you’re volunteering to take a stray shot from a man of the badge —” “I’m doing no such thing.” “Then it sounds like we’ve got an agreement, if you’re willing to shake on it.” “How do you like things done? Written?” “No. That’s a paper trail. We shake on it, and if you try to slide a blade between my ribs, then I slide one twice as big back between yours, and I promise you I’m better at it.” TAG LIST: @glittcrpeach / @endymions / @namelessscribe / @demonites / @sarmarble / @meafeminas / @burntpyre / @rkmoriyama / @elonanwrites / @writers-lovers / @astorsa / @faerisms / @usuallyholytrash / @faesongwrites / @madsaialik / @knife-dragon / @misotheismed / @leopardsnake-stories / @fartistically / @ohnoitsthebat / @emdrabbles / @jcckwrites / @jungdrizzydraco / @saorisea / @heldinhishands / @semblanche / dm or reply to be added. -- source link
