Chimaeras:The monster for which the art of magically fusing animals was named, and rightfully so, as it is one of the most spectacular examples of how magic can craft something nature would not. The original chimaera was the product of Typhon and Echidna, who were ludicrously complicated hybrid monsters themselves designed for the sole purpose of creating new and bizarre mish-mash monsters. It was more than its component parts, as the specific arrangement of those parts is what made the monster so impressive. With the depth perception of the lion head at the front, the wide field of vision of the goat head in the middle of its back, and the serpent head hidden from sight, it was deadly from all angles. Of course, subsequent chimaeras have not always been made with the same care. Substituting the original wyrm with less feisty serpents is common, and many wizards fail to arrange the heads correctly, giving their chimaera a more straightforward case of Hydra syndrome instead. Some even fail to produce more than one head entirely, blending the animal elements too thoroughly and losing many of the advantages the Chimaera presents. More rarely, some add both a dragon AND a serpent, creating winged chimaeras that are almost impossibly to control. -- source link
