This week, we’ll be looking at Psalters - specifically the decorated or historiated initial ‘B’ in each manuscript. This 'Initial B’ begins the first words in the first psalm of psalters: “beatus vir” meaning “blessed is the man” in Latin. The psalms formed the core of the monastic office, daily prayers, and ceremonies that structured a monk’s life. According to the Rule of Saint Benedictine, monks were required to recite the entire psalter each week.Ms Codex 655 is a Cistercian Liturgical Psalter originating from Belgium and created between 1475 and 1499.
