romanticacadxmia:luke-lion-and-autism:thirstygirlclub:littlebearie:simplyahopelessdaydreamer:I remember a teacher telling me how Archaeologists would hack off the noses of statues they found in order to remove any indication that it was of a black person or any POC. It hurts me to think of all the art we’ve lost and damaged because of historical revisionism and flat out racism.I…wasn’t taught this. Only about penises being broken off as censorship. When I was in primary school (around 8 or 9) I asked why none of the Egyptian statues had noses. They lied to us and said that they broke off because they were a really fragile bit of the statues so when I learnt the real reason (years later) I was so pissed off with teachers for lying to millions of school children around the world. It’s disgusting and needs to be taught properly.Forgive me if I sound rude, or that it has already been said but they didn’t purposely hack off noses, at least not in any concievable organised fashion. As with Greek statues, noses on the statues break easily over time and in transportation, not to mention past Pharaohs did this to previous ruler, such as with the statues of Nefertiti. This post has been going a while now and if anyone remembers the post bots that all reblogged from one another that seemed to be social justice blogs, as this post is anti racism, which is good, but factually incorrect, when it was revealed to be bots for interfering in elections by dividing people in social justice/leftist circles by what they thought we wanted to hear, like this story on the surface is believable enough, white people have been horrible to black people, so why wouldn’t this story be true? By adding in false information ,when non black allies attempt to correct the misinformation, a black person may feel threatened by a white person who appears to be speaking over them, which is fair enough, but it has been shown over and over in the notes that this information is factually incorrect. The result is the black person trusting white people who otherwise would have at best been allies and at lowest, not a threat - by sowing mistrust in any social movement, i.e. black civil rights, lgbt, feminism, bigots, the far right and conservatives benefit from a divided mistrustful left- and they do that by spreading false information which creates a sense of injustice (i.e the fake noses hacked off story) and a sense of conflict when this story is challenged by people who aren’t in the affected marginalised group (black people, specifically from the northeast of Africa) makes it easy for right wingers to at least electorally, weaken the left. Sorry if this turned into a rant, I’ve replied to a previous version of this post but I can’t sit by when I know these things aren’t true. I can go and find receipts for the “social justice fake news” blogs if anyone needs me to, I just don’t like seeing people of the same political inclination as me falling for this, because that means it worked, and that ain’t good news. literally. when new pharaohs or emperors would take power, they would sometimes want to humiliate their predecessors in death and make them seem less powerful in doing so to make themselves seem more powerful. they’d deface their predecessor to make themselves feel better about themselves it was literally just insecure rulers with something to prove.also some believed that cutting of certain body parts of their statue would cut off their soul to their Gods. so if they removed the depictions ears, they’d no longer be able to hear the word of the Gods, if they cut off one arm they wouldn’t be able to receive gifts from God, and the other arm they wouldn’t be able to give to the Gods. lastly, the biggest fuck you to their predecessors was that if they cut off the nose they wouldn’t be able to breathe and their immortal soul would suffocate and die. so like… although some may have racist explanations, and it’s heart wrenching to continue to have black history erased with removing afrocentric features off of one of the most adored ancient civilisations ruled by black kings and black queens, it’s the way that ancient rulers would ensure that the memory of those who came before them would be tarnished and they themselves would be proven more powerful. they did the same in ancient rome and ancient greece. statues without noses or missing limbs (some made of weaker stone actually did just erode and the more fragile things like noses and arms fall off first) but the ancient kings and queens mostly did it to their own people. including scratching off their faces in drawings too. -- source link
