April 22nd 1994 - Richard Nixon dies Richard Milhous Nixon, the 37th president of the United States of America died in New York four days after he had a massive stroke. He was 81 years old. Richard Nixon’s personality, his iconic double victory ‘V’, and his involvement in the Watergate scandal have had enormous repercussions on American pop culture. 20 years after his death, and 40 years after he was president people still give the victory V when descending airplane stairs. (Worth noting, Eisenhower started the double 'V’ sign for victory in WW II, and Nixon was just imitating him. But Nixon’s slightly hunched posture and big smile made his version, the iconic one. Similar to how some cover songs become more popular than the original, like “Don’t Turn Around.” Made famous by Ace of Base in 1994 when it was originally recorded by Tina Turner in 1986.) To this day whenever a political scandal breaks -gate is tacked on to the end. It’s a subtle nod to the Watergate Scandal (so named for the incident in which five men were arrested trying to bug a hotel room in the Watergate Hotel, acting under the presidents orders) which forced Nixon to resign the presidency in 1974 and famously say “I am not a crook.” -- source link
