nikkiscarlet:kari-izumi:stra-tek:A brief history of Star Trek fandomOMG, that’s us I remember being a wee baby Trek fan 20 years ago and being told I was enabling Berman to cater to the lowest common denominator for enjoying Enterprise. Great times, that. Also, right-wing fans have been whining that “This new Star Trek is too politically correct!” with every new iteration since at least The Next Generation. I remember seeing comic parodies referring to the Prime Directive as “The PC Directive”, and perceptions of Picard as a stuffy killjoy compared to their image of Space Cowboy Kirk, back in like 1995ish. Then you actually watch the original series and there’s Sensitive Feminist Philosophy Nerd Kirk being just as preachy as Picard or any of the other captains about diversity and inclusion, feminism, choice, the value of art and literature, the value of actually caring about other people, etc. So those who complain about ST: Discovery and ST: Picard taking a progressive stance are (as usual) missing the whole point of Star Trek and have been for decades.Yeah. I can understand fans from the Voyager/Enterprise scale of the timeline getting it twisted a little bc Berman was not *as* focused on dismantling sexism or lifting up the voices of the more marginalized cast members, but even at its lowest point, the show made it clear that it ain’t just here to push right wing propaganda. -- source link
