fandomsandfeminism:vahlokke77:fandomsandfeminism:vahlokke77:fandomsandfeminism:richwhitecismale:Feminism then and now.Mhm. Those are two sets of women, out being loud about issues that are important to them and other women. Suffrage and sexual assault are both important issues, then and now. Not really seeing the point you’re trying to make? Sexual assault? They’re just walking around half naked with the word slut written on them, where does the sexual assault come in?That’s literally the issue SlutWalks are about? On April 3, 2011, approximately 3,000 women (and men) marched the streets of Toronto in what they dubbed a SlutWalk. Angered by the comments of a Toronto police officer — who had ill-advisedly said that women shouldn’t “dress like sluts” if they wanted to avoid being assaulted — marchers rallied to protest blaming rape victims for their own assaults. To date, more than 50 satellite walks have taken place in major cities around the world, including Boston, London, New Delhi and Sydney. Dozens more are being planned and the original organizers have said they plan on making SlutWalk an annual event. How’s walking around naked going to help anything? And, I mean, yeah. You should take certain precautions to avoid being hurt by someone else. It’s not about fault or blame, it’s just the way you keep safe on the streets. Like, I’m not gonna do anything that might get me robbed or shot. I’m gonna minimize those chances however I can. Same logic here. Nobody’s blaming anyone, they’re just trying to do their jobs and keep people safe.Way to miss the entire point. The idea that women “dressing like sluts” is a risky behavior that makes women less safe, than those who dress modestly 1) IS victim blaming 2) isn’t even supported by evidence. There’s no evidence that dressing “immodestly” makes women more likely to be raped. (Being alone in a club or in a secluded place- might legitimately put a woman at more risk. A tank top and shorts- not.) It is a way of telling women who don’t suitably conform to some puritan idea of respectable dress that they are at fault for being the victim of violent crime. Men don’t rape women because they see a peak of cleavage and some thigh skin and go into a violent-sex-crave-trance that only could have been prevented by some sweatpants and a cardigan. And regardless of whether or not YOU understand the logic is beside the original point: Slutwalks ARE about sexual assault and victim blaming, which are important issues. -- source link
