fujisan-ni-noboru-hinode: Second Lieutenant Michio Otani on Okinawa, 1944. He fought at the battle for Hill 362 on Iwo Jima, and famously, on March 6th, 1945, he destroyed two M4 Sherman tanks using explosive charges, got into another damaged Sherman, and engaged and destroyed another with his Sherman’s cannon. He survived this engagement and is documented to have evaded capture on Iwo Jima for over 2 months, but he has been unaccounted for since April 1945 and it’s unknown if he is still alive today. From what I understand, no officers survived the battle for Iwo Jima, so it’s very likely he fell on the battlefield. -- source link
