I re-read the books recently and when I got to the end of DH after Harry views Snape’s memory and realizes he’s a horcrux and will need to die to truly defeat Voldemort, I was absolutely heartbroken reading that entire scene. The last time I read the books was awhile ago and so the heaviness of that scene never truly got to me but now that I’m older and can really process the sheer depression Harry felt in that moment, that scene made me want to cry. Harry realizes that he will never see his best friends again, he will never see his love again, he will never get to step inside Hogwarts again. Obviously he does survive but Harry didn’t know that then. And I think it’s an interesting contrast from before (primarily in OOTP) when Harry was always sort of in the mindset of being ready to die versus in DH when he realizes he HAS to die to save his friends and realizing deep down that he’s not ready and wants to live. -- source link
