What does Charles White sound like?For WQXR host Terrance McKnight, it’s a medley ranging from soul and blues singers—and Charles White subjects—like Bessie Smith and Mahalia Jackson, to the concert hall music of George Walker and Handel. Working with Museum curator Esther Adler, McKnight developed a playlist for our Charles White exhibition, pairing songs, poetry, and political speeches with the artworks on view.“I wanted people to take three to five minutes to meditate on these images…to walk away with more empathy and more appreciation of the beauty of what [White] did and what was important for him,” said McKnight.
