Inventor Lucius Copeland of Arizona with one of the earliest motorcycles, the Phaeton Steamer, 1894. The vehicle was actually a tricycle, powered by a steam engine. Because it used a steam engine, the cycle took several minutes to accelerate to top speed, which was 10-12 mph.
