Damaged Buildings With “Quake Lake” Beyond, Madison River Valley, Montana, 1969.Ten years earlier in 1959 the Hebgen Lake Earthquake, more commonly known as the Madison River Canyon Earthquake, registered at about Richter 7.4 and caused a landslide which dammed the Madison River, one of the major tributaries which combine at Grand Forks as the Missouri River. The dam formed “Quake Lake.” Twenty-eight people died and there was substantial property damage. One of the main access roads to West Yellowstone and the National Park was destroyed and thus closed for a considerable period. Incidentally, long before the earthquake one of my maternal great-grandmothers was born near Ennis just downstream from this site. -- source link
