They were an impractical purchase to begin with, those shoes. After a difficult day at work and, perhaps, because she was still feeling a bit lonely after a recent break-up with her boyfriend, Jessica had decided to do a bit of shopping. As soon as she set eyes upon them in the display window she was captivated, despite their apparent unsuitableness. For one, Jessica worked in a library, which was hardly the place for such outrageous shoes. The heels were several inches taller than anything she’d ever owned and she wasn’t even certain she could walk in them. And the color! There was nothing in her wardrobe that would go with that electric blue. She bought them anyway. She only wore them around the house, at first. They were her own little secret, she rationalized, though she did get better at walking in them. When she stumbled upon a few dresses that would complement her shoes, she picked them up anyway - just in case. It was handy that she did so, because it was only a few weeks later when she decided to wear her shoes to a friend’s dinner party. Soon every decision seemed to bring her favorite shoes to mind. Blonde hair really went better than her mousy brown hair. An extra fifteen minutes on her calves at the gym were worth it, even if she was a bit late for work. Jess fiddled with the zipper on her electric blue and red minidress as she finished getting ready for work.
