galleryofunknowns:Jan Daemen Cool (b.1584 - d.1660), ‘A Dutch Family Group: Portrait of a Man, Woman, and Two Girls, and Portrait of Two Boys’, c.1633, Dutch, oil on panel, currently in the collection of Duff House, Banff, Aberdeenshire, ScotlandThese two paintings, once whole originally formed a much larger composition, but were cut into two (or more) parts some time after its completion. The left side, with the two boys, came into the collection in 1891, and the right side being purchased from a London dealer in 1963 in order to reunite the two. Previously attributed to the artists Jacob Gerritsz Cuyp and Karl van Mander III, recent work has attributed the hand to Jan Daemen Cool. The identities are lost for now, but their ages remain inscribed; the man and woman both 40, the boys sixteen and thirteen, and the older girl is ten; the gallery makes no mention of the youngest girl’s age. The inclusion of an ocean scene for the background complete with ships perhaps alludes to an involvement with the shipping industry. (x) (x) -- source link
