allegoriesinmediasres: In Hindu mythology, Rambha is the Queen of the Apsaras. She rules over the clouds and rivers, and she rejoices in dancing. When Rambha attempts to disturb the penance of the sage Vishwamitra, he curses her to spend ten thousand years as a rock, until another Brahmin frees her. Curses work in her favor, however, when she is raped by Ravana, the dread King of Lanka. Her husband Nalkuber never thinks to blame her, but instead curses her attacker that if he should ever force himself on another woman, his head will burst into seven pieces. Generations later, this seven-sharded curse is enough to spare Sita of Ayodhya the worst of Ravana’s attentions while she is held captive in the ashoka vatika.
