dddots: Endpaper Challenge #5 This week, I decided to make a book that can be used either as an album or a guest signing book. The endpaper for this is ideal for the task. In the Manual of Bookbinding, it is described as: “Method 5 is stiff-leaved on to the first leaf of the section for 3mm. The waste is later cut down to 25mm and put down on to the board under the board paper. For a heavier book it is advantageous to use jaconette instead of white waste.” For this, I used dark blue papers for the textblock and the same paper for the endpaper. This is so that the white waste paper shows up against the dark blue. For most other bindings, it is best to use a paper that is close to or similar colour or tone of the textblock so that it can be disguised and hidden. But for this instance, I used a contrasting colour to accentuate the white waste. A more refined way of doing this would be to make sure that the white waste is about 0.5-1mm shorter than the actual textblock and endpaper so that it will not show at the head and tail. But if the book is to be trimmed, then this action is not really necessary. Inside the last section is also a light coloured paper with the writings of this endpaper method, the date, and my signature. It is difficult to write on dark blue unless I get a white or silver pen, so I decided to add this page. It can be torn out of the page is not needed. This book is covered in German-made linen book cloth and is for sale at USD40 or SGD45. -- source link
