His new piece, co-written by Erik Nielson, an assistant professor of liberal arts at the University of Richmond and author of several studies on the subject, looks primarily at the case of rapper McKinley “Mac” Phipps, who is currently serving 30 years for a crime he insists he didn’t commit. The court is twisting Phipps’ lyrics against him.White rock bands have been singing violent lyrics since they first started stealing Black music. The Beatles sang “Catch you with another man, that’s the end, little girl”. Elvis and Johnny Cash sang about going to jail for murder. Eminem raps constantly about killing women.
