THANK YOUToday in peds outpatient clinic, I had a 15 year old male that wants to transition to female. The schedule only said 15yom requesting a female doctor. When my attending first saw that, he said “I don’t think I like a teenage boy requesting a female doctor, especially one that just punched a wall and broke a bone in his hand two days ago.” This patient also was a ward of the state, which sometimes makes them a little “scarier” to anybody that’s worked with an aggressive patient. I started reading through the chart and caught a line that said he was transitioning to she and preferred [girl name] to their given name, shared it with the room of residents and attendings, then everyone seemed to get quiet and a little uncomfortable. I said I would love to go in and take the history and physical and they looked at me like I had grown a third eye. Granted, this is my first week of MS3 rotations, so I’m obviously still have the shakey fear about doing anything on my own, but I’ve been doing my best to jump at any opportunity to learn by throwing myself into the deep end. Y’all, I think I garnered some respect from the big dogs in the clinic for being so chill and enthusiastic. Which was only a cherry on top after getting to talk with this amazing, smart, strong teenager that is blazing her trail to the life she wants. -- source link
