“More Homosexuals Aided To Become Heterosexual,” Jane E. Brody, The New York Times Sunday Edition, page 1, February 28, 1971. @nytimes. Despite emphasizing the “science” showing that “the young homosexual who is strongly motivated to change his sexual orientation has an excellent chance of success,” Brody’s article also included the views of some medical professionals who disagreed with the prevailing wisdom. Lawrence LeShan, a New York psychologist, explained that “homosexuality is a way of loving, not a pathology. The therapist’s job is not to go along with the prejudices of the culture, but to help a person adjust to himself so that he can deal adequately with the culture….The Gay Liberation movement is the best therapy the homosexual has had in years.” On December 15, 1973, the American Psychological Association voted to remove homosexuality from its list of mental diseases. #lgbthistory #lgbtherstory #gay #bi #lesbian #trans #pride (at The New York Times) -- source link
