An Egyptian mummy portrait from the Roman period of a young boy. Such portraits offer us valuable insight into the appearance of the Egyptian population during about 30 BC-AD 324. For more examples, see here. These portraits were essentially the mixing of two traditions: the Roman interest in realistic portraiture, and Egyptian mummification. The portraits were placed on the outside of the cartonnage coffin of the deceased individual.Child death was an unfortunate, but ever-present reality of the ancient world. The young boy is shown here with a floral garland in his hair.Courtesy of & can be viewed at the Brooklyn Museum. Via their online collections: 41.848. -- source link
