So with an hour before midnight I thought I should squeeze in a #ThrowbackThursday post! This is a picture of Mumble just minutes old, and a picture of her which (I think) was taken yesterday. This would of been the first picture people would of ever seen of her! I quickly learnt after she hatched that chicks like her are often culled as soon they break free from their eggs. Their lives are written off because many people believe that they wouldn’t make it, and would have no quality of life. I was encouraged to cull her for those very reasons. A few people, even to this day, believe that I’m just prolonging her suffering. But Mumble is not suffering, she is becoming an ambassador for disabled chickens everywhere. In the early days, a lot of people would say how it’s such a shame she’s the way she is. Back then I understood the sympathy. These days, not so much. No one needs to feel sorry for Mumble because of her disability anymore. Mumble’s disability isn’t Mumble, and that’s why she has survived. Her lack of eyes did not stop her. It slowed her down, but never once stopped her. She needed help at first, and I was prepared the give her my time and my love. The only time she ever needs me now is if we are free ranging or if she wants cuddles. I feel great pride whenever I see chicks that were given a second chance because of Mumble, and I love to read her their stories too. I tell her about Mr Magoo (who is a duck) and Dervish, who were both born without eyes like her, as well as Gammy the four-legged hen, and all the others that I’m messaged about almost every day. Of course I doubt she understands my babble, but I’m sure if she did she would be absolutely thrilled. -- source link
