Okoye on International Women’s Day. She stole every scene. I’ve been struggling with this piece for weeks. I had the sketch down pretty quick and then couldn’t figure out how to render it without overworking it. I switched brushes to try different textures, line, no line, dramatic lighting, flat color, everything. I’m quite happy with the result considering the rough process. Shout out to @nicholaskole for his recent insights on hard vs soft edges. Refocusing on a fundamental rule is sometimes helpful to use as a flashlight out of the woods. With this in mind I wanted to describe Okoye’s killer cheek bones with one soft edge to describe the form, and a hard shadow edge. It felt right and the painting flowed from there.
