rhamphotheca:Jewelwing DamselfliesFive species of jewelwing are found in North America. River Jewelwing (Calopteryx aequabilis) is perhaps the most widespread, and the only species found in the west, but Ebony Jewelwing (C. maculata, shown) is probably the best known. They all have metallic blue-green bodies, and most have at least partially blackened wings. Jewelwings are slow flyers, fluttering along wooded streams and occasionally pond edges, often perching in sunny spots on leaves and twigs overhanging the water. In the north of their range, jewelwings are mainly found in late spring and summer; in the south they may continue to be encountered from early spring well into the fall.photo by David Hill (platycryptus) on Flickr(via: Peterson Field Guides) -- source link
