sheisherownprisoner:sixpenceee:This study was published in the New England Journal of MedicineA study has shown that a fake surgery is just as good as a real surgery when it comes to reducing pain in patient’s who have a torn knee cartilage.Researchers in Finland studied two sets of patients (one that received the surgery, and another that was led to believe that it had) and observed no significant differences in improvement between the groups after one year. These implications are profound. Millions of people spend ridiculous amount of money for surgeries each year. Are some types of surgery really necessary? Is simply telling someone they are about to go through an effective surgery good enough? It’s up to debate but the study’s sample size was relatively small about 146 patients. Further investigation is needed.
