Inspired in part by the accoutrements of the artist’s fashion commissions, Smash was created by Minter for the Brooklyn Museum’s 2014–15 exhibition Killer Heels: The Art of the High-Heeled Shoe. Rather than highlight the glitz and glamour of the designer shoe, Marilyn Minter’s video is more foreboding. The model’s feet are uncomfortably squeezed into the heels, which slowly and ominously destroy the glass pane separating the subject from the viewer. This is the second time this video has shown at the Brooklyn Museum and there are just two weeks left to see it. Step into the Minter’s Pretty/Dirty world before it closes on May 7.Marilyn Minter (American, born 1948). Smash, 2014. HD digital video, 7 min., 55 sec.
