philamuseum:Martin Puryear is known for his large-scale sculptures that combine traditional craft and sculptural techniques with his fascination for evoking familiar objects through abstraction. As suggested by its title “Old Mole,” this large sculpture—about five feet high and five feet wide—evokes the small, tunneling animal. Puryear studied building and woodworking techniques in Sierra Leone (where he served in the Peace Corps), Sweden, and Japan, where he traveled shortly before making this work. This hollow form was made by bending and weaving together hundreds strips of wood, using a technique that recalls boat-building or basketry.“Old Mole,” 1985, by Martin Puryear © Martin Puryear, courtesy of Matthews Marks Gallery -- source link
