peashooter85:The Collier Flintlock Revolver,One of the first true revolvers, this interesting pistol was the invention of Elisha Collier of Philadelphia in 1814. A precursor to the modern revolver, the Collier had a six shot cylinder that turned when the hammer was cocked. It was a flintlock firearm, meaning that the flash pan had to be primed with a dab of gunpowder before firing. When the hammer stuck the steel frizzen sparks would ignite the powder, which channeled a small spark through a hole in the cylinder, which discharged the round. Interestingly, a small hopper full of priming powder was located near the frizzen, so that each time it was cocked a priming charge of powder was automatically placed in the flash pan.In 1819 an English company called John Evans and Son of London bought the patent for the pistol from Collier. From 1819 to 1824 10,000 were manufactured. In the 1830’s Samuel Colt was a cabin boy on a ship in the Far East when he first saw one. After finishing his career as a sailor Mr. Colt purchased a Collier revolver and studied its mechanisms in detail. He would modify and improve upon the design, creating the famous Colt Single Action Revolver, a gun which would revolutionize firearms design forever. -- source link
