Johann Christian Bach, also known as “the London Bach” and “the English Bach.” He was the youngest son and eleventh child of Johann Sebastian Bach. He spent the last twenty years of his life living in London. By the end of his life, his music was considered too old fashioned and the Galante style of the Baroque fell from favour as did his fortunes. He is considered to have been a major influence on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Sadly, like so many of my artistic friends, he was financially ruined by a dishonest servant: in this case, his steward. He died in debt in London and only the intervention of Queen Charlotte saved his wife from penury. This portrait of him is by Gainsborough and was painted in 1776 when Bach was 41.
