thecosmosmadeconscious: I love where I work. Granted it’s only a part time job…I’m honored to work here. When you first walk into the room you feel like you’re on the deck of the Starship Enterprise…or at least some long abandoned TV set. In the center of the circular room you’re greeted by the Spitz A3P star ball from the 1960′s. There’s even a guest book started from way back when the planetarium first opened back in the 50′s with names and dates from so long ago. There’s a vintage orrery, ancient books, and even the boxes for the replacement light bulbs look like they’ve jumped right out of 1955. When I walk into the room it’s like I’m walking into a time capsule. The place even has a funny, old musty smell that I’ve come to love…something like old books. I can’t describe the joy I feel knowing that I was gifted keys to this place, and I come here whenever I need to get away. When my house burned down on March 10th I lost everything that pertained to my upcoming show at the planetarium, Cosmic Fireworks. I decided instead of moping I would buckle down and redo everything. So I did…in essentially one week. My meteorite collection burned in the fire which was a big part of my show…so my boss lent me his large chunk of Sikhote-Alin meteorite to show off instead. I sold out the dome both nights in a row…and it was pretty intense. I bought some last minute pieces of Campo del Cielo and gifted a tiny piece to a wide eyed little boy. And one of my coworkers came and gifted me these books to help begin to rebuild my collection. In any case, this room brings me joy during these dark times I’ve been going through…and I wanted to share. -- source link
