merlinconfessions:I’ve seen a lot of people wondering what the purpose of Gwaine’s death was, and I thought I would clarify. In S3 we learn that “Magic is nothing without Courage and Strength”. Arthur may have been Merlin’s destiny and love - whether you view that platonically or not - but Gwaine was probably his closest friend besides Arthur. Gwaine played a role in their destiny too, and by taking away Gwaine as well, Merlin really was left with nothing and the tragedy completed. -- source link
