Jesus, thank you.I cannot tell you how many times I have had to point out what the audience at conventions actually LOOKS like to people in the industry. They can do signings in a booth full of every kind of person all day long, every color, every size, every orientation and more, and STILL go online and talk about how only white straight males read comics.IT IS PROFOUNDLY UNTRUE AND INSULTINGLY IGNORANT.Well, the sad thing is in a lot of comic shops there isn’t a lot of diversity. When I go to my local be it Wednesday or Friday (when they get a second shipment of stuff that went too fast Wednesday) there are only cishet white guys, and more than half literally look like the real life version of the comic book guy from the Simpsons and talk the same way. The owners are a bit more female friendly because money, but they consistently understock comics with heavily female characters/audiences, and I’ve never been in the store at the same time as another female or female presenting person. Mostly because I live in a conservative area and most girls and women are afraid to go into a comic shop and face the fake geek girl ™ quiz or judgement on their purchases, so they buy online. Heck, it took me until I was 25 to decide to get my comics at a comic shop. And I still feel awkward there. If the industry were to look at demographics from shops like mine, they would think only white dudes read comics because that would be the overwhelming majority of what they saw. -- source link
