The Trabant, Trabi for short, were common in communist-era East Germany. At the time, they were the most common car there. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the cars fell out of favour, even being ranked as one of the 50 worst cars ever made (it was once mockingly described as ‘a spark plug with a roof’).
