brooklynmuseum:Born in Boston, Massachusetts in September of 1934 to Jamaican immigrant parents, Lorraine O’Grady lived a full life before developing an artistic practice at the age of 43. O’Grady held the titles wife, mother, research economist, graduate student, translator, rock critic, and professor before adding “visual artist” to her repertoire. When she began to make artwork in the late 1970s, she encountered barriers similar to that of the workforce: racism, sexism, and a deeply segregated art world. O’Grady’s work combines historical, social, and political critique with a biographical narrative to create work that continues to address contemporary concerns.Both/And marks the first retrospective of Lorraine O’Grady’s career.
