There is a rich history behind the tranquil gaze of this girl posing in a gesture of prayer. This statue is a 20th century copy of a 1st century B.C. object that decorated the Villa of the Papyri before being buried by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. This statue, among 450 others, was commissioned by Philadelphia department store magnate John Wanamaker. Exhibited in the Italian Pavilion at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, this statue has since been gifted to @pennmuseum . She currently resides outside the Goldstein Family Gallery in the Kislak Center. #Pennlibraries #Pennmuseum #librariesofinstagram #kislakcenter #statue #Vesuvius #Wanamaker #Philadelphia #Worldsfair #StLouis #specialcollections #fineart -- source link
