So we got there about on time, but the horses were already going out. Got to put a few out at least, and then I was going to grab my horse and ride.No we were mucking today, turns out. Next weekend is our off weekend. I was extremely displeased, as I had riding boots, not muck boots, and all my riding gear and a lot of plans for today. But we mucked pretty quickly in the end, so I couldn’t complain too much. Teacherlady did insist on overfilling the already-full bedding cart so that left a huge mound of bedding we had to clean up and work around but. You know. That’s how it goes.I brought Q and Quattro in, and was very lazy with Q. Just let him amble, honestly. Then I hopped on Quattro. Well, okay, I tried to, and he first squealed at me crankily and tried to fling me and run away, then eventually settled and let me wiggle my way painfully onto him.I have no ups, for the record, and so my leaping onto him from the ground with zero help from anything else was extremely awkward and awful. But I got on him, no halter or anything. Which he clearly knew because he absolutely fought me every step of the way. I tried to gesture right? We’re going left. I want to go? We stop. I want to stop? We’re cantering. Just absolutely incredible display of what a jackass he can be when he wants to.But through enough annoying him, he eventually started listening grudgingly, and we were able to do a little bit of work and a few exercises together. He really is extremely smart when he wants to be.Then I just put them out to the trail and of course there Quattro immediately comes over to me for pets and attention because he’s a dick.I did have to refill their water tub. The hose was LITERALLY like three feet too short so I ended up standing there for five minutes, awkwardly arcing the water into the tub. Teacherlady tried to find another hose to use but. The end was wrong to connect, so.But hey. Horses got their water, that’s what matters.I ended up wandering a bit. Poking horses, getting bit by Buff and Ves, etcetera. Then I went and got Jaeger and Hale: cut a bit of gunk out of Jaeger’s hooves, cleaned then up, gave them both a brushing before putting them back outside. It was a nice little distraction, you know? It was kind of funny, the way that it ended up being so relaxing. That’s the thing though, right? Like. I just like being with the horses. They make me happy. I know for a lot of people it really is “ride or die” but not as in “yeeeeah I’ll die before I give up my riding!!!” but “either I’m riding the horse or it can die and I’ll get a new one because all I care about is riding.”For me, it’s not about riding. It’s about the horses. And I think that’s why I just sort of… turn off the pain, the migraines, the aches while I’m at the barn, and then everything only hits once I’m back here at home. It’s because I’m there for the horses, and the horses are all around me, giving me that… chemical and spiritual high in my brain.I dunno. I’m tired, sore, pushed my stupid lemon body too hard and lordt do I have things to do still. Currently feeding the snake, for example. My gods the way his mouth stretches, it’s wild.It was a good day, though. I’m glad to push myself, even if I know there’ll be consequences for it. I’m turning into a gnarled old man. Heck, we all are. Jager is nineteen. I thought he was 16! It’s freaking wild. But that’s life.It just keeps moving forwards, whether you want it to or not. -- source link
