Muck day. Mare pee season has begun woooooo. We got there about on time, and I was able to start feeding horses right away while Teacherlady did hay. Then I started letting them out because the weird weather was really making all the horses antsy.Buff chomped down on the rope and refused to let go so I just dragged him out like that. He and Velaris like. Cornered me immediately in their paddock until they got treats, as they are assbutts. We also ended up slightly shifting the order of horses around, since neither Lacey nor her boy were going out.It was nice to be part of the crowd shifting the horses rather than dealing with unexplained changes, for once.Mucking itself was pretty awful. I did clean Dakota’s stall out immediately and open it up, and Quattro and Q came in right away. They actually ended up spending most of their time inside: it was supposed to thunderstorm today - thankfully ended up not doing so - but Q is super sore so. He just wanted to be out of the mud as much as possible, and I was happy to let him get away from the muck,It went faster than I expected, even though. Pee everywhere, ugh. Mares going into heat and going crazy and. Peeing on things.I brought Zara in for partner early because it did briefly start rainstorming, and Q’s an asshole to her in the stall half the time, so I just put her in the crossties. And partner comes over and undoes one so she can “chat” with Lacey and okay I was really surprised that they actually seemed to just hang out quietly super nicely. I think Lacey might have squealed at her like, only once the entire time.Once we were done, I got Quattro, and went up to the arena. Where it was surprisingly busy because there were some random lessons today. Fantastic. They also uh. Left the mule in a corner with the drag still attached and just threw a bunch of cones around it, and Quattro really did not like that. And then started using it as a “oh no, it’s so scary aaaaahhhh this means I don’t have to go in that corner right?” thing. He was semi-good, at least. And once everyone was gone I opened the arena gate while on his back and let myself outside, and he was really good for that.We went for a little trail ride. He actually did really well, was super peaceful! Then we started a trio of deer out o hiding in the woods and they blasted off through the forest and Quattro jumped like two feet into the air, sacking me pretty good and nearly bolting. To his credit he didn’t try to throw me off and got himself half under control. I had to weave him to stop a few times but overall he behaved. Half-decently. And he was pretty spooked, to be entirely fair.So that was a fun adventure. In less good news, apparently Lacey and Eli Shama’s owner came by, and she is considering just putting Eli Shama down because of the state of his hooves. You know. The state she helped put him in. A lot of his problems would be greatly helped by horseshoes, but she doesn’t want to shoe him. She would apparently rather just. Not-alive him.Stuff like this frustrates me and makes me mad a lot. The lack of responsibility and how these amazing animals are treated so. Poorly. Like, I get euthanizing a suffering animal, especially when they… show you they’re ready. But to kill such a beautiful, intelligent creature purely out of stubbornness is disgusting.But. We’ll see what happens. We’re going to work hard to get him back towards comfortable mobility. It sucks so much considering how well he was doing before, that he was light as a feather even with my partner riding him, and then she just butchered his hooves. Still. Have to focus on what we can actually do. Not on the things we can’t change. -- source link
