It seems that printers always work perfectly fine when there is no urgency at all. But if you dare to need something important printed NOW, there’s always a problem, like paper jams, dried up or empty ink cartridges, and last but not least, today’s problem, the computer not finding the freaking printer in the god damn network. Of course it was only the most important assignment of the semester, to be handed in in less than thirty minutes and the teacher would not allow sending the work in per email. Thank goodness her roomie had answered her plea for any kind of assistance with a very helpful text. You can try it from mine if you want to, pw: pGOe5YBU; I hope it’ll work out for you, good luck! Five minutes later she finally calmed down a bit when the printer began spewing out page after page. Assured that at last things worked out she got out of the room to get herself ready for the day ahead, leaving the printer to its busy work. She just got back as the last page finished when the screensaver on her roomie’s laptop caught her eye. It was the most intriguing sight she’d ever come across. Despite giving the little play of lights all of her attention it took her some time to realize that the video was only a few seconds long, so perfect was the loop, so distracting the pattern of the colors. So easy was it to lose oneself in any part of the fascinating display. She was still aware of the pressing matter at hand but she couldn’t tear herself away from the screen. It felt like any moment now she would find the point where it restarted, there had to be a flaw somewhere in the loop and it was only a matter of time to discover it. Before she could find any clue though the battery of the laptop died, stopping the beautiful swirls on the screen and snapping her out of her efforts at once. Bewildered about the fact that she’d sat there for nearly two hours she gathered her work distractedly and hurried to class, hoping that a plea for mercy and the promise that it would never ever happen again would persuade the teacher to be lenient toward her about the barely missed deadline. Thankfully her professor took the proffered paper, replacing his stern look with understanding after he noticed how clearly upset she was. The only thing on her mind however was the screensaver. Her friends noticed that she was absent minded the rest of the day and the night was spent restlessly rolling from one side to the other, her mind constantly occupied by the short perfectly looped video. The next day she waited anxiously for her roommate to leave for classes to boot up the computer, this time plugged in to avoid yesterday’s debacle. Just a few minutes before she had to get ready herself, that had been the promise she’d made herself halfheartedly. School was instantly forgotten when the colors finally started again though, filling the void that had been caved in her brain by them yesterday. She didn’t notice her roomie coming home hours later until the laptop’s lid was sofly shut. Even then it took her a while to recognize the person standing beside her. Still way too out of it to reply in words the question wether she had liked what she saw was only answered with a very enthusiastic nod. Her reaction was as vigorous when asked if she would consider doing some favors for the chance to see the colors again. Starting the next day she got two hours of “screen time” as soon as her chores were done. They started off simple enough, going to classes, doing all course work, and cleaning up after herself at home. She had tried to sneak in some extra minutes with her beloved patterns but her roommate had changed the password to the computer. Angry at first about the lack of trust she was appeased with the promise of an extra hour with the laptop each day she would do a particularly fine job. Every chance she got she found herself stopping for a while, looking at the black screen longingly and imagining herself sitting there again when she would receive her reward. Every day they renegotiated the deal and she took on more and more chores, readily agreeing to anything asked of her for yet another chance to see the colors. Every time she saw her roommate she was reminded of the wonderful colors and slowly she began to fantasize that one day she would be asked for a favor more befitting the creator of this lovely piece of art. ———- Shoutout to ditzydolls for bringing my attention to this great picture, I hope you like what I did with it. -- source link
