One of my favorite things is reading old martial arts magazines from the 1980s and seeing all the ads in back for mail order ninja things. The current historical consensus is that ninja, at least in the form we know them today in movies, actually never existed, and they were a creation of the romantic and nostalgic 19th Century. There were military divisions that did stealth and assassination in Japan during the warring states period, but they were not all that different from other spies in other nations.  -- source link
