swapnil1690:Untitled (Krishna and Balram)Late 19th Century Bengal Oil on Canvas 33" x 27" Named for his dark complexion – the work Krishna means “black” or “the deal one” in Sanskrit — Krishna is depicted here in blue-green while his brother, Balram, who was Fair-skinned, and thus their iconographic depiction maintain these skin tones. The decorative richness of the two figures in this early Bengal oil is reminiscent of courtly miniature paintings while also drawing on then current Western realist portraiture of royalty, while the rounded contours and the voluminous body is similar to the Kalighat tradition. -- source link
