#mayvinylchallenge by @jennn_erator Day 10: a “grower,” something you didn’t like at first but now do. Welp, I had this one planned before the tragic news about Nick Cave’s son came out yesterday… makes it awkward yet all the more important to feature his album in the challenge! My very first exposure to Nick Cave was shortly after Push the Sky Away came out. His was a name I’d often heard in the same breath as many other artists I loved (Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits…), so I figured I oughta give him a try. Just my luck, I listened to his latest album, which was a huge change in direction and not the most immediately accessible. I came away like “why do people like this guy? Pass.” Boy was I wrong. A few years later I found my way into his older work, and with that context, this album flowered into the brilliance I could not hear on first listen. It is absolutely one of his finest, most beautiful records. But if rhythm and melody are what draw you into music (as they do me), perhaps not your best starting point either!
