The Strydvlag (struggle flag), also known as Vryheidsvlag (Freedom Flag) was first used when combined forces of the two sovereign Boer republics (The South African Republic/“Transvaal” and the Orange Free State) fought together during the 2nd Boer War. The flag was later adapted by the Afrikaner Volksfront in 1993, and then later by the Freedom Front. It has become used as a an ethnic flag of Afrikaners, used as such by organizations such as the UNPO.The flag was later on a shortlist of proposals for a flag to represent the Afrikaner people, from a 2004 contest of the Genootskap vir Afrikaner Simbole’ (GAS, Fellowship of Afrikaner Symbols).
