With apologies to anyone who can’t bear to see innocent books maimed, this is from Yuichi Yokoyama’s story “Book” from his first book, New Engineering. Look at it this way: the books helped the protagonist escape his assailants, so it’s not like they died in vain. Translations of sound effects in order by page as provided in PictureBox edition: (1) “WAAARGH” sound of screaming, “DOSU” sound of books landing; (2) “ZAK” sound of sword cutting into book, “BARA BARA” sound of paper falling; (3) “ZAK” sound of sword cutting into book, “ZUBAAAA” sound of a sword cutting, “VWOOOM” sound of a sword swinging; (4) “WAAARGH” sound of screaming, “SHAKA” sound of a book being sliced. And finally let’s hear from the artist: “I don’t like fighting, but I do enjoy drawing the movement of bodies in combat, which is similar to that of bodies in sports… . It may be that the pictures I draw are not scenes seen through human eyes. They may represent the perspectives of an animal, insect, machine, or other inanimate matter.” -- source link
