Section of a 12th century satirical animal scroll painting, in which a frog has thrown a rabbit to the ground in a fight, to the laughter and delight of three frog companions. A visible puff of gas from of the victorious frog’s mouth shows the animal’s exertions. These scrolls, Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga or Chōjū-giga, are sometimes credited as being the earliest works of manga and they are still hilarious and incredible many centuries later—the frogs in particular. -- source link
