therobotmonster: therobotmonster: As a warmup exercise, I made a sprite of my DynoGuard character Linn, based generally on a drawing by @siphersaysstuff . I’ve been recently fascinated by EGA and the mid-to-late-80s Shareware-Era of games. This is driven partially out of my nostalgia for the era, partially by the hole in everyone else’s nostalgia where those games have slipped, and EGA’s weird mix of limitation and versatility. 16 colors for a game was way more than the 8-bit game systems tended to manage, but it was always the same sixteen colors: So you’d get these detailed, sharp-looking sprites but everyone’s skin was either chalk-white or bright red, violet and orange didn’t exist, and if you didn’t have a gaming card, you were moving with the arrow keys and jumping with control or spacebar. The “CGA″ white/magenta/cyan palette has become synonmyous with the 80s, I’m not sure why EGA has fallen into obscurity. And now, for funsies, my Linn sprite dropped into a screencap from Dangerous Dave 2. As another tinker-for-fun, I came up with Hodge-Podge, shown here: Top row: VGA, EGA Middle Row: CGA Bottom: NES (layered sprites) -- source link
