workingclasshistory:On this day, 24 November 1866 Malvina Tavares, the pioneer of secular and radical working class education in Brazil, was born in Encruzilhada do Sol. She moved to Porto Alegre to study, and later set up a school based on the modern school principals of Francisco Ferrer. Several of her pupils subsequently became leading labour organisers in the city, including Espertirina Martins and her sisters. She lived until 1939, and today there is a street named after her in Porto Alegre.
