Films Watched in 2021- (1/???)The Prom (2020) - Ryan Murphy (2.5/5)I can’t lie—this was a rough start to the year. As always, Streep gives 100% percent, no matter what she’s signed up for, and Kidman and Rannells prove their chops as well (though the latter could have used some more screentime, considering how good his big religion song was). Corden, unfortunately, plays as much of a horrible, clichéd version of a gay man as the Broadway characters are imagined versions of the “coastal elite” brought to life (but that’s meant to be at their expense, so it works); how that happens with actual LGBTQ+ people on both sides of the camera (and the even more depressing true story involved) is a true shame. The non-A-list lead performers have more than adequate chops to carry their weight (and one has even been suitably aged down via hair and wardrobe to seem like she could be Kerry Washington’s daughter rather than Hamilton’s bullet), but everyone involved with this in any sense of the word deserved better than a Glee’d version of what clearly has potential as the truly inspirational musical it once was. -- source link
