First and foremost, for his beautiful, plain-speaking poems with their powerful complications and formal sense of adventure – as in the Canal Bank sonnets. But for something else as well. In his journey into his own space, Kavanagh gave a radical and influential witness of the poet’s independence from tradition and objectification. Like his poems, that influence, that witness, remains – still making and remaking a future for Irish poetry.
