On this day, 13 May 1968, up to 10 million workers began a general strike in France in the May 68 rebellion, as hundreds of thousands took to the streets in Paris. Many people had been angered by the police violently repressing student protesters in the previous few days. A mass strike, along with factory occupations and riots continued for weeks. And while the rebellion did not overthrow capitalism, which was the aim of a number of participants, it did result in many significant improvements to pay and working conditions.
