skepseis:Ephesus, TurkeyThis was once a lavish ancient Greek city, and later, a major Roman city, on the west coast of Asia Minor, in present-day Turkey.Ephesus had a population of more than 250,000 in the 1st century BC, which also made it one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean world. Its history spans from the Neolithic to the Ottoman Empire it reached a straggling end in 1914 when it was completely abandoned. The original growth came from its service to the Temple of Artemis (completed around 550 BC), it was one of the greatest sites of the ancient world, and needed constant attention. Its origins however remain in the Bronze age, and have links to Mycenaean groups that were mentioned in the Iliad. Androklos of Athens, however, founded the main site with auspices from Delphi. He eventually founded the Ionian league and laid the accidental foundations for the rest of the Ancient world.(Photo by Monica Forss) -- source link
